Defense Minister Issues Warning as Tensions Rise

Reminder of Cold War Threat Looms

For the first time since the Cold War, Germany has begun updating its contingency plans in the event of a conflict erupting in Europe. The move comes amidst heightened tensions with Russia and concerns over the potential for an escalation in the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has sounded a cautious tone, urging Germans to brace themselves for a "longlasting and difficult" situation. The updated plans, he said, reflect the "new reality" of a constantly evolving geopolitical landscape.

Germany's relationship with Russia has been under strain since the annexation of Crimea in 2014. The war in Ukraine has further exacerbated tensions, with Germany supplying weapons to Kyiv and imposing sanctions on Moscow. Amidst these developments, Germany's leadership is grappling with the challenge of balancing its support for Ukraine with maintaining dialogue with Russia.
